New Faculty Welcome
The Division of Nephrology is delighted to announce the addition of the following doctors to our faculty.
Gayle M. Vranic, MD
Gayle received her MD from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, followed by internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University. She then pursued a Nephrology clinical fellowship at Vanderbilt, followed by a Nephrology transplant fellowship at the University of Virginia. Dr. Vranic is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine with primary responsibility for the care of patients at the University of Virginia Health System. |
Sundaraman Swaminathan, MD
"Swami" received his MD in India followed by internal medicine training in Chandigarh, India and Montefiore Medical Center, NY. He then pursued Nephrology fellowship training at the Mayo Clinic. Swami then was an instructor at Mayo Clinic and followed by a tenure track assistant professor faculty position at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Swaminathan was regarded as one of the best teaching faculty at University of Arkansas and winner of a number of faculty awards. He has published in the high profile journals including: N. Engl J Med, Annals of Internal Medicine, and Kidney Int. Dr. Swaminathan is now an Associate Professor of Medicine (CE-te) and his clinical activities will be in the area of transplantation. His research laboratory focuses on kidney fibrosis. His other area of clinical interest in which he has gained national recognition is on nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. |
Daniel Hu, MD

“Danny” received his MD at East Carolina University School of Medicine followed by internal medicine training at Duke University Medical Center. He then completed a Geriatrics Fellowship at Duke University Medical Center followed by Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Virginia. Danny then moved to Renton Washington where he was a physician at the Valley Medical Center. He was also the Medical Director for Kent Kidney Center, Northwest Kidney Centers, Seattle, WA. Dr. Hu is now an Associate Professor of Medicine (CF) and his primary responsibility for the care of patients at Piedmont Nephrology Clinic, Orange Clinic and care of UVA patients admitted to Martha Jefferson Hospital. Danny will assume the role of Associate Director, Home Dialysis Program. |
Joshua King, MD
“Josh” received his MD at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine followed by internal medicine training at the University of Virginia. He was Chief Resident at the University of Virginia from 2009-2010. He then completed his Nephrology Fellowship at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. Dr. King is a part-time faculty member as an Instructor of Medicine at the University of Virginia. His primary role will be an attending physician at Culpeper Regional Hospital. |
John Hayes, MD
John received his MD at the University of West Indies, Mona, Kingston, Jamaica followed by internal medicine training at Carillion Clinic/Virginia Tech School of Medicine. He then pursued Nephrology Fellowship at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hayes is a part-time faculty member as an Instructor of Medicine at the University of Virginia. His primary role will be an attending physician at Transition Care Hospital/Health South. |
