Charles Brooks, MD presents preliminary data from the Acute Kidney Injury Risk Reduction Initiative

Charles Brooks, MD

Dr. Charles Brooks, Associate Professor in Nephrology, was invited to make an oral presentation of the preliminary data from the Acute Kidney Injury Risk Reduction Initiative, A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Reduce the Incidence of AKI in Patients Undergoing Invasive Procedures to Diagnose and Treat Cardiovascular Disease study for the  25th Evidence Live-13 Conference in Oxford UK, jointly hosted by the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine and the British Medical Journal with associate sponsor support from the Cochrane Collaboration and Oxford’s Kellogg College.

The data presented by Dr. Brooks, involving cardiac surgery patients in the first phase undertaken in the initiative, showed a decrease in the risk-adjusted incidence of AKI in CABG patients and a decrease in hospital length of stay, the latter resulting in substantial cost savings for the Medical Center.  This study was done in collaboration with UVA Cardiac Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Emergency General Surgery, Neuroradiology and Anesthesiology,

The annual Evidence Live conference brings together leading speakers in evidence-based medicine from all over the world, from the fields of research, clinical practice and commissioning. Evidence Live bills itself as the place for learning about the latest advances in evidence-based healthcare and finding out how they can be best applied in clinical practice.
