Research Description

A fundamental requirement to reduce disease burden is to discern etiologies and epidemiology to guide effective interventions such as vaccine. We aim to develop sensitive, specific, and quantitative molecular diagnostic methods for detection of causative agents, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Then we apply these methods to studies in various settings, such as case/control, birth cohort, or surveillance, to assess the regional/global burden of these agents and more importantly identify their association with diseases. Meanwhile, these methods are also being used in intervention studies to measure the effectiveness of a prevention or treatment procedure.
