Virginia Center for Diabetes Professional Education
Mission
The Virginia Center for Diabetes Professional Education (VCDPE) has been a unique resource for providers of diabetes care in Virginia since 1987. The mission of the Center is to improve the quality and quantity of health care available to persons with diabetes in Virginia through the provision of professional education programs based on research and best practices and professional education resources relating to diabetes. Located at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, its programs and resources benefit health care providers throughout the Commonwealth. Its multidisciplinary staff, representing endocrinology (Dr. Anthony L. McCall, M.D., Ph.D), nutrition and diabetes education (Joyce Green Pastors, R.D., M.S., C.D.E), and psychology (J. Terry Saunders, Ph.D.), bring a variety of essential perspectives to the Center’s educational programs and services.
- To improve the knowledge and diabetes care practices of physicians, medical residents, nurses, dietitians, dietetic interns, pharmacists, and other health care providers in Virginia by providing diabetes professional education programs
- To increase access to diabetes patient education programs in medically underserved areas of Virginia through the use of telehealth technologies
- To develop educational programs targeted to persons with or at high risk for diabetes in community-based settings, e.g., places of work, physician office practices, fitness centers, and pharmacies
