Conferences
Research in Progress (8:30–9:30 am, each Tuesday,
September through May): Faculty and research trainees present their
research and receive constructive criticism and advice regarding their
work.
Endocrinology Clinical Case Conference (1:00–2:00 pm, every Tuesday [mid-August to June]): Fellows present 2-3 clinical cases to the clinical faculty. This is a teaching conference where pathophysiology, diagnostic considerations (e.g., technical aspects of hormone assays), approaches to management, and relevant literature are routinely discussed.
Endocrinology and Metabolism
Grand Rounds (12:00–1:00 pm, every Tuesday September
through June): State-of-the-art lectures by
internal and external speakers on clinical and scientific topics. Each
fellow also presents a clinical and/or research topic once a
year.
Fellows’ Didactic (Clinical Lecture) Series
(2:00–3:00 pm, each Tuesday excepting Journal Club days [also from
12:00-1:00 pm during July and August]): Faculty give didactic lectures on
a wide variety of topics. As the number of important topics is to
large to cover in one year, the lecture schedule is designed to cover
all important topics at least once every two years. Before the lecture
is to be given, faculty are asked to provide reading material (review,
seminal paper, practice guideline, chapter, etc.) corresponding to the
lecture. (These one to two key references may be something that
summarizes what will be discussed, or they can be supplementary reading
dealing with an important related issue that will not be specifically
discussed.) These references (along with the slides used in the
lecture) are made available to fellows via a password-protected
repository called ACTOR, which is managed by the Dept. of
Medicine.
Journal Club (2:00–3:00 pm, Tuesday once a
month): Fellows and a faculty member review a recent scientific
publication, focusing on methods (e.g., study design, statistical
analysis) and clinical relevance.
Thyroid Cancer Case Conference (4:00–5:00 pm,
last Tuesday of the month): Faculty and fellows from Endocrinology,
Radiology/Nuclear Medicine, Pathology, and Surgery/Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery discuss complicated thyroid cancer cases. The primary
goal is clinical decision-making in a multidisciplinary setting.
Pituitary Case Conference (7:45–8:45 am, fourth
Friday of the month): Details regarding 6-8 pituitary cases are
discussed by faculty/fellows from Endocrinology, Neurosurgery,
Neuroradiology, and Neuropathology.
