As a program that is constantly striving to improve we have several recent changes and planned changes that you should know about…..
This year we welcome four new faculty – Dr. Mellisa Pensa recently completed her Family Medicine and Preventive Medicine residency at OHSU in Portland. Dr. Melissa Rodgers completed her residency at ETSU, and an OB fellowship at UT-Knoxville. Dr. Melissa Fullerton, a UVA grad, is returning after 4 years in Seattle where she completed a Family Medicine Residency at UW and an OB fellowship at Swedish hospital. We are also recruiting for a faculty member to join our residency team and serve as Inpatient Medical Director. We also welcome Dr. Siobhan Statuta, former chief resident, sports medicine fellow and faculty, to her new positions as Sports Medicine Fellowship Director.
We continue improving our curriculum. This year we are excited about beginning a community-based dermatology rotation with Family Dermatology of Albemarle. We have added electives in Integrative Medicine, developed several new outpatient pediatric experiences, implemented routine use of the “Ages and Stages Questionnaire” for pediatric developmental screening, and are now implementing “Reach Out and Read” – an early childhood reading-readiness program.
This past year we started a process of team care in our main teaching practice. This coming year we are partnering with Dartmouth Clinical Microsystems to further build our skills and capacity to practice as teams committed and able to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. This will provide great curricular benefits to our residents, who will learn about the most effective ways to work as part of an interprofessional team and robust methods of quality improvement.
