I grew up in Winchester, Kentucky and attended Centre College where I majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  My undergraduate experience was amazing and I wish I could attend college all over again.  During my time at Centre, I had many experiences that fueled my passion for medicine.  I had the opportunity to study for a semester in Strasbourg, France, the seat of the European Court of Human Rights.  I also traveled to Vietnam and Cambodia, where I did an independent study comparing the health care system in these two countries.  Now, at the University of Virginia, I plan to participate in the global health track, which is one of the only residency programs I found that enables me to rotate abroad for two entire months during residency.

After college, I attended medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. I was happy to live close to home so I could spend time with my family during medical school.  UK also won the NCAA men’s basketball championship when I was a fourth year med student! I was very hesitant to leave my family for residency.  However, when I interviewed at the University of Virginia, I immediately sensed the close relationship between the residents and the caring attitude of the faculty.  Charlottesville is a very friendly community in a beautiful town.  During my first week here, three of my neighbors brought me house-warming presents!

For me, Charlottesville offers the perfect combination of rigorous academics and small town charm.  As a refugee relocation center, the town is full of cultural diversity and has amazing restaurants.  I also love the beautiful architecture and the variety of outdoor hiking and camping activities.  The UVA Department of Family Medicine is the home of the Center of Information Mastery, teaching clinicians how to access evidence-based information for point of care decision-making. I feel incredibly fortunate to have access to this resource as a resident.

If any of these aspects of our program interest you, please come visit.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me.  I would love to introduce you to this great place.
