Greetings!  If you are shopping for a good place to do your residency, I hope that you will strongly consider our program.

My name is Claire Akin and I'm a PGY-3.  I came to Charlottesville for medical school and loved the area, the people, and the UVA Family Medicine Department.  I decided to stay for residency and I have never regretted the decision.  My path leading me to residency here is untraditional.  I graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in international studies and a minor in fine arts and spent the next 2 years living and working for the Japan Exchange and Teaching  (JET) Program in Tochigi, Japan.  During that time, I felt the strong calling to medicine so returned to the States and began my post-baccalaureate pre-medical studies at George Mason University and Goucher College.  I also trained as an EMT and volunteered for Americorp as an ESL teacher at the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia.  Then I came to UVA in August of 2001 and never left.

My husband, Josh, is a pastor of a local Calvary Chapel church and owns and mangages a coffee business (Micah's) in addition to heading up a Christian rock band on the side.  We enjoy hiking along the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains, mountain biking at Douthat State Park, and charcoal grilling in our backyard with friends.  Please drop me a line if you have any questions about our residency program or the area. ckn3s@virginia.edu
