I grew up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and I was very excited about my rmove back there, and about the exceptional training program that I found at UVA. I grew up going to a family doctor, and had a suspicion that this was what I wanted to be when I left Virginia to attend Wellesley College ten years ago. After a few twists and turns in my story, I found myself studying medicine at the University of Rochester and becoming even more committed to the idea of being a family doctor.

The idea of coming back to the part of the country that I grew up in and learning family medicine was very exciting to me. Even more exciting was the program that I found there. The faculty members and my fellow residents at UVA were astute clinicians and wonderful doctors. They were also exceptional people, with diverse interests and a real commitment to life outside the hospital. I loved being in a university setting where I got to learn from amazing mentors in a variety of fields and had an active role in medical student education.

I also loved being in Charlottesville - My husband and I chose to live outside of town and we found a lovely cottage with extraordinary views of the mountains, peace and quiet, and lots of land to explore. We were very happy and enjoyed hiking with our two dogs, gardening, and living in a place without ten feet of snow each winter! I was extremely happy with my training, and, despite the hard work and difficult days that residency brings, I left there feeling confident and well prepared.

(After graduating from the Family medicine esidency, Abby commenced an OB residency elsewhere.)
