Coming from an area in the northeast where family medicine was frequently overlooked, I knew that I wanted to train in a well respected program that played an integral role in the community. After hearing great things about UVa's program from friends and from other residency directors (!), I decided to look more closely at it and was very impressed. The Charlottesville area is a beautiful place to live, and the patient demographics are quite diverse: international refugees, people from rural Appalachia, migrant farm workers, and university affiliates round out the mix. Throw in the biopsychosocial emphasis and I was hooked.

I must confess, though, that what truly knocks my socks off more than anything else about our program is what I've learned since joining it. The faculty and the residents here are amazing - generous, intelligent, and out to save the world. Their enthusiasm is inspiring, and their support (often requested at the last minute) always seems to come through so that we help each other weather the occasional, inevitable storms that residency creates. I feel very lucky to be here.
