Epidemiology and Community Health
This course provides an introduction to the basic principles of clinical epidemiology, research design, and statistical analysis. The first part of the course focuses on statistical and methodological underpinnings of research, the normal distribution, probability, research questions, hypothesis generation, and estimating sample size and power. The second part of the course concentrates on various study designs in clinical research: case-control studies, cohort studies, and clinical trials. The final sessions address various aspects of research implementation, including survey/questionnaire design, data management, community and international studies, and grant funding. Throughout, students present their research proposals for group critique and discussion, and there is a final presentation to a larger group of faculty for discussion and suggestions.
