Clerkship Preceptor's Role

Clerkship Preceptor's Role

The Preceptor's Role In Your Clerkship

Your preceptor is responsible for facilitating and/or conducting the following:
Day 1
  • Discussing goals and objectives of the clerkship
  • Discussing mutual expectations from the clerkship experience
  • Reviewing your Clinical Skills Inventory (PDF)
  • Planning a time for a mid-point review
  • Orienting you to the practice
Mid-Point
Conducting a mid-point review to include:
  • Progress in meeting the curricular goals and objectives
  • Your progress to-date
  • Ways for you to improve
  • Opportunity for you to provide feedback to your preceptor
Final Review
Preceptors will complete a final evaluation form of your performance.
We also encourage preceptors to debrief with you about the overall experience.
Overall
  • Provide an educational experience that helps you meet the goals and objectives of the clerkship
  • Provide you with opportunities to interact with patients
  • Expose you to a varied patient population
  • Provide feedback for you to improve your clinical skills

Although your preceptors are responsible for facilitating the above activities, you also are responsible for taking an active role in this process. If you feel your preceptor has not met with you to discuss these items, initiate the conversation. Your preceptor is very busy, and it can be easy to slip into the routine of the clerkship without taking the time up-front, during the mid-point, and at the completion of the clerkship to discuss expectations, progress, and feedback.
