I first came to Charlottesville in 2002, and have been here for undergrad, a year for post-bac pre-med, a year working in the UVA ED as a tech, and after that medical school. During that time I spent a few years running with the local rescue squad as well.  My favorite things to do in town are to go to music concerts and try out the new restaurants and breweries that are coming to town.  I also enjoy backpacking and camping on the AT as well as going on day hikes. I play squash and swim laps occasionally if time/weather constraints prevent me from going outdoors.  I really like to play music (mainly mandolin and guitar) so if anyone plays I’d be happy to get together to do a little pickin’.  Other hobbies I enjoy when time and circumstance permit are working on my car, gardening, and photography.

After growing up in Big Ten country (Champaign, IL) I headed south to the SEC (Athens, GA) for college where I majored in Exercise and Sports Science with a minor in Geography.  While at the University of Georgia I enjoyed watching college football, getting outdoors, and listening to live music.  I completed my medical school training at Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL.  My interests in medicine in addition to Emergency Medicine are Sports Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, and International Medicine. I'm looking forward to enjoying everything Charlottesville has to offer from hiking, biking, golfing, wine tasting to great food and live music.

What is the best part about this residency program? The people! More than anything I wanted a residency program that could provide a supportive learning environment. You will find that here.

I was born and raised in Columbus, OH where I lived until heading to Kalamazoo, MI for undergrad. I attended Kalamazoo College as a soccer player, chemistry major and also enjoyed a year of foreign study in Germany. With my now husband Josh, I then moved to New York City for two years where I completed a master's degree in human nutrition at Columbia University and worked for an electronic medical record company. After our time in NYC, we headed back to the midwest to attend Wright State University in Dayton, OH where I graduated with a combined MD-MPH degree. My current interests in medicine include sports medicine, community health, and injury mechanisms. I am considering a Sports Medicine Fellowship. Josh and I are heading to Charlottesville along with our two dogs. We are looking forward to exploring the trails, eating at local restaurants, and the mountain views.

I grew up in Appleton, WI surrounded by my large, crazy, and wonderful family.  I moved to Ames, IA for undergrad and studied Biochemistry.  It was there I met the love of my life, Christopher. We were married after undergrad and moved together across the state for medical school.  We are now excited to come to Virginia together for residency!  He will be a Neurology resident this year. In general, I will try about anything and am incredibly easily entertained (yes, I did once watch 3 hours in a row of Swamp People…).  I enjoy cooking/baking, travel, running, cycling, and about anything outdoors.  I am excited for the chance to explore some of the climbing, hiking, and paddling around Charlottesville!

I'm a born-and-raised Indiana boy, growing up in South Bend, IN before heading off to Indiana University for undergrad and med school.  Having spent the majority of my time in Indiana, it was impossible not to grow up a huge Fighting Irish and Hoosiers fan. I graduated medical school with a joint MD/MBA degree and also spent two months during fourth year on a medicine rotation in Kenya.  My current interests include Emergency Department operations, hospital administration, and international health systems.  These interests, however, are constantly evolving… I come to Charlottesville with my wonderful fiancé Kait (a neurology resident) and our 4 year-old English Cocker Spaniel, Scout.  Having spent only minimal time in Charlottesville, we are excited to explore the beautiful Virginia countryside!

I grew up in Phoenix, Maryland, a small town 30 minutes north of Baltimore. My love of football lead me to Clemson University, where I graduated with a degree in Biology. After a year of neuroscience research at the NIH, I went on to medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School. I had a great time at EVMS and am excited for the next step of my training in Charlottesville. My interests primarily revolve around the Baltimore Ravens and Clemson Tigers; however, I'm excited to root for the Cavaliers in 2012. I also enjoy cooking and traveling whenever I get the chance.

I was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa until age nine when my family moved to Vancouver, B.C.  After three years we ended up in Dallas, not far from the University of North Texas where I did my undergrad.  I attended the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) for med school, half of which took place in Galveston, the other half in Austin. I am the oldest of four and enjoy road & mountain biking, backpacking, climbing, guitar, and golf. I have a dog named Cooper and we are both looking forward to the mountains, four real seasons, and all the other great things Charlottesville has to offer!

I'm the youngest of 5 children. I grew up in Holt, Michigan which is a small town near the capitol city of Lansing. I attended the University of Michigan for undergrad (Go Blue!). I then went to the University of Chicago for medical school. I'm excited to leave the big city and get my residency on in Charlottesville. Met my wife in high school, happily married ever since. We have a little dog who has little dog syndrome. No children (dog enough currently). I am a huge football and basketball fan (both college and pro, both watching and playing). I enjoy intramural sports, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, good music and nature photography. I'm currently learning to play the djembe drum, emphasis on learning.

JoeyGrover

Joseph Grover

My name is Joseph Grover and I will be starting my first year as an EM resident at UVA.  I attended Case Western Reserve University for both undergraduate and medical school and therefore have been a loyal Cleveland sports fan for the past 8 years.  While I really enjoyed my time in Cleveland, I am looking forward to some warmer winters in Virginia.  I originally grew up in Silver Spring, MD, so of course my parents could not be happier of having me closer to home.  I recently married my medical school sweetheart, Natalie, who I couples matched with (she is in internal medicine).  In my spare time, I enjoy antique shopping, biking, hiking, and old book collecting.  Within EM, my particular interest is EMS.  I currently serve as the Midwest Regional Coordinator of the National Collegiate EMS Foundation.

The best part of the UVA residency program is the people! Hands down the smartest, friendliest, and funniest group of people I've worked with in a professional environment.

I grew up outside of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, home of Arnold Palmer and Rolling Rock Brewing Co.  I played a lot of football, but was too small (and uncoordinated) to play in college.  I went to Holy Cross in Massachusetts for undergrad, and then taught high school biology at Landon School in Bethesda, MD for two years.  I debated whether to become a paleontologist or a doctor but ultimately chose to serve the living.  Next, I attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.  I'm a huge movie buff, but mix it up with shows like Game of Thrones, New Girl, and old-school Office episodes.  I enjoy anything outside, exercising, and White Russian cocktails.

Heather Reed-Day (aka HRD)

My name is Heather Reed-Day.  I am originally from Knoxville, TN. My husband and I moved to Memphis, TN for medical school, and have really loved it. I have been married to my high school sweet heart for the last 10 years, and he is amazing.  He is currently a professor at University of Memphis, but is hoping to go back to teaching high school math.  We have one child, Maddox and one super awesome five year old nephew, Zach, who we claim as our own.  I enjoy running, working out, and playing outside. There really isn’t much I don’t enjoy as I’m fairly easily entertained.  I am loving this chapter in my life in Charlottesville, VA!

I grew up in Atlanta and went to the University of Georgia. After college, I moved to Washington DC where I did a master’s degree at Georgetown University in Biohazardous Threat Agents and Emerging Infectious Diseases. I worked in biodefense and disease surveillance in DC for a few years before moving back to Georgia to go to medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. I am a big Georgia Bulldog fan and look forward to bringing my love of SEC football to ACC country. I also enjoy outdoor activities and beating my friends in geography trivia games. I am very excited to be here in Charlottesville; training in the setting of such a unique university and city.

What is the best part about this residency program? Depth of attending backgrounds, resources of UVA, and the scribe program.

I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, attended undergrad at Wheaton College (outside Chicago), and med school at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  I also completed an MBA in Health Administration from the University of Colorado Denver. I am interested in the business/systems side of EM and wilderness medicine.  I have a wonderful wife, Crissie, and two kids Nora (2) and Peter (0).  We enjoy family time together, the outdoors, and are active members in our church, Trinity Presbyterian.  Part of our family lives in Guatemala and we make a trip there every couple of years.  I also enjoy watching sports when I get the opportunity.

JustinStone

Justin Stone

I grew up in a rural area in Pennsylvania and later moved to the suburbs of Harrisburg, PA.  I earned bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and microbiology at Pitt, before moving to Philly for medical school at Drexel.  There I met my lovely fiancée Laura who is also an emergency doc at UVA.  Traveling and enjoying the world’s people and places has been a huge interest since high school and I hope to continue global activities throughout my career.   Over time I became a lover of both the city and the countryside, and Charlottesville is a great place to get a little of each.  I enjoy good food, exercise, sports, outdoor activities, wineries/breweries, and spending time with my family and friends.  I say we should try to love life…why not?

Streicher

Heather Streich (aka Streicher)

I grew up in the sprawling, sweltering, wonderful city of Phoenix, Arizona with my two younger siblings and our parents until I went off to college at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska...talk about a culture shock! (Ask me to tell the story about my first few winter weeks there- classic ignorance!) I studied biology and philosophy and was very involved with my sorority while there. Right after college I hustled back to the University of Arizona for med school. As the Match drew near, I decided it was time for another change and was lucky enough to match at UVA. I have absolutely loved my first year here in Cville and really enjoy spending time with my fellow residents. When not at the hospital, I like to read, be outside, cook, work on my house, go wine tasting, and (ever the girl) shop! I have a goal of visiting all 7 continents before I turn 30 (3 to go!), I wish that I could dance (ballet, ballroom, you name it) every day, I am completely phobic of fish (seriously), and I can't wait for my sister to start college in North Carolina this fall and be within driving distance.

Kevin Sullivan

Born and raised in New Jersey.  Received a bachelors and masters in psychology from St Joseph's University.  My lovely wife Brynne is a pediatrics resident here at UVA.  I have a black lab named Cooper, and you can usually find us running on the trails around town!  My favorite things about C'ville are the Farmer's Market, Shenandoah Joe and Ridge Road.

The last of three sons, I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and followed in my brothers' footsteps, pursuing engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park (go Terps!). I attended Penn State College of Medicine for medical school (fyi, the medical campus is not in the same location as the undergraduate campus).  My interests include soccer, outdoors, travelling, and photography.

I grew up in Port St. Lucie, Florida (near West Palm Beach) then headed south for undergrad and medical school at the University of Miami (Go Canes!). I love to try new things and consider myself pretty adventurous. Some things I like to do in my spare time are running, painting, reading, laying out by the pool. I'm enjoying exploring Charlottesville - going to wineries, canoeing on the James River, and trying the delicious local eateries!

I grew up in Wichita, KS, the "big city" in Kansas, and went to college at Washington University in St. Louis, MO.  I then moved east to spend the next 9 years in Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania for the combined MD-PhD program.  For my research there, I studied pediatric traumatic brain injury in an animal model, and correlated the mechanical effects of the injuries to the biological outcomes.  Some of the things I do for fun include swimming, martial arts, photography, and exploring new foods and flavors.  Living in different parts of the country definitely enlightens one's palate!

I grew up in Severna Park, MD (near Annapolis), but I have been in Virginia for quite a while.  I earned my bachelors and masters degrees in computer engineering at Virginia Tech, before realizing that I actually wanted to be a doctor.  So I attended the Post-Bac program at Johns Hopkins to get my pre-reqs.  After being in Baltimore for a year, I couldn't wait to come back to Virginia.  After medical school, I couldn't bring myself to leave c-ville.  I enjoy odd movies, hiking, skiing, science fiction, and grilling out!

EdwardHawkins

Eddy Hawkins

Born in Lynchburg, I grew up near Cleveland, the oldest of 4 boys.  I ran a lot, played a lot of basketball, wrestled, and got into weight-lifting, but not as much as the next oldest, who is hoping to become a Columbus police officer.  My other brothers are going into engineering and maybe medicine.  I went to school in Cleveland then in St. Louis, where I met Holly, my fiance, and Bella her (now our) dog.  Holly, Bella, and I enjoy exploring Charlottesville and all the trails around the area!

I was raised in Rialto, CA. and served in the United States Air Force and then the national service organization, Americorps.  Upon completion, I returned to school and completed a BS degree in biochemistry at The University of California, Riverside and then attended UCLA for medical school.  I enjoy snowboarding, scuba diving, spending time with friends & family, and practicing aikido.

I grew up in Longmeadow, a small suburban town in western Massachusetts. I went to Colorado College for undergrad. Before attending UMass for med school, I worked for a couple years in Boston as an EMT and volunteered in a rural village in Ecuador. Now I'm in Charlotteville and I have quickly fallen in love with my new home .  There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep me occupied. Whether its hiking, mountain biking, canoeing or playing with my new dog, life is good here. There are also plenty of great restaurants and breweries to keep me well fed and hydrated.

I have grown up in a number of places, but consider Charlottesville to be my home.  Having completed my undergraduate and medical studies at UVA, I am proud to sing the "Good Old Song".  It goes without saying that I love Charlottesville.  I enjoy hiking, shooting hoops, cooking, and spending time with my friends and family.  I have an identical twin brother who is training to become a Urologist at Penn State.

JoshuaStanton

Joshua Stanton

I am a native of North Carolina and grew up in Catawba County, an hour north of Charlotte.  I graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2002 and immediately entered the Peace Corps and traveled to China where I was a teacher for 9 months.  Unfortunately, the SARS epidemic hit, the program was closed and we were forced to leave.  On the bright side, I was able to then transfer to Romania where I continued to work with children and young adults for another 14 months.  It was my time in the PC that convinced me to become a doctor and I immediately enrolled into a Post-Bac program near my home in NC and after 2 years, I was accepted at New York Medical College where I was conferred my degree this past May.  Throughout medical school I was widely involved in student government and have become deeply passionate about remaining engaged in our communities even while our training occupies so much of our lives.  This allowed emergency medicine to hook me pretty early in my medical education.  It is a field that brings us face to face with our society at all levels and affords us the opportunity to  be an active participant in finding solutions.  Currently, I am excited to be practicing here in Charlottesville; a community built upon a world class university and learning my art from exceptional minds.
