Rotunda-Heart

UVA's Division of Cardiovascular Medicine offers the latest and most innovative diagnostic and treatment services available, within an interdisciplinary and collaborative framework that utilizes the expertise of physicians, researchers, radiologists and other healthcare professionals -- all with the aim of providing our patients with the most advanced heart and vascular care available anywhere.

Each year, the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine cares for more than 5,000 patients at UVA hospital and 35,000 patients in heart-related clinics.

Whether you're interested in heart disease prevention or treatment options, you can rely on our depth of expertise and breadth of resources.

UVA's Heart and Vascular Center combines innovation, research and expert clinical skills. Some of the advanced heart care treatment options we offer include:

  • A new, less-invasive treatment for ventricular tachycardia, a condition in which the heart's lower chambers beat erratically.
  • A new robotic catheter system, the Sensei®, that makes it easier for electrophysiologists to maneuver a catheter into difficult-to-reach places in the heart.
  • A left-ventricular assist device (LVAD), known as the TandemHeart®, which makes treatment possible for patients who would otherwise be too weak or too sick to tolerate lifesaving procedures. UVA is the first hospital in Virginia to offer this device and procedure.

We also offer Virginia's first center for adult congenital heart disease, and the region’s first heart care clinic for women, UVA Club Red Clinic. Club Red focuses on prevention and shared medical appointments.

Each year, our doctors perform more than:

  • 4,500 vascular studies
  • 700 major vascular operations
  • 1,600 diagnostic angiograms
  • 2,000 interventional procedures, such as angioplasty, vascular stent and aortic stent-graft placement and embolizations.

The depth of our expertise and use of new technology is something you won’t find at other nearby medical centers. Our doctors specialize in diseases of the two great vessels, the aorta and the pulmonary artery. We also perform more angioplasties (a procedure to widen narrowed or blocked blood vessels) of the superior mesenteric artery than anyone else in the country. And we treat more high-performance bicyclists than any other hospital in the country.
