The University of Virginia accepts residency applications only through ERAS. International medical graduates must have graduated from a medical school within the past five years, have at least two months of clinical experience in the United States with evaluations from each experience, and hold a current ECFMG certificate. We can only sponsor J-1 visas. We review applications and extend invitations to interview on a rolling basis starting September 1, with an absolute deadline of December 1 for residency starting July 1 of the following year. Application materials

All applications must include the following items:

• 3 Letters of recommendation including one from an anesthesiologist with whom you have worked
• Updated Curriculum Vitae
• Medical School Transcript
• USMLE Scores (applicants must pass the USMLE exams on the first attempt and have an average of 220 or more)
• Dean's letter (transmitted November 1 from your medical school)
• Personal statement explaining your reasons for choosing anesthesia as a specialty.

Interview process

We typically interview over 100 candidates, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from late November through early January. On Tuesday evenings, candidates are invited to meet informally over dinner in the home of one of our residents.  The Department of Anesthesiology will cover the cost of one night's lodging for your visit.

During the interview day, prospective residents meet with several of our faculty members, including the Program Director, Edward C. Nemergut, and the Department Chair, George F. Rich.  You will also interview with one of our chief residents. You will tour the hospital facilities and have an orientation to residency at UVA.  Over lunch, you will have an opportunity to talk to some of our attending physicians, residents, and nurse anesthetists.
