Continuing Medical Education

The Department of Anesthesiology sponsors many opportunities for continuing medical education.

Grand Rounds

Our weekly Anesthesiology Grand Rounds presentations have been approved for CME credit. If you live in the Charlottesville area, you are welcome to attend and register for credit.  Grand Rounds occur almost every Wednesday at 7 AM in Jordan Hall Conference Center.  We post the topics and speakers to the Health System calendar, and they also appear on the right side of our home page.  For more information, contact Patty Jenkins.

The Medical Simulation Center at the University of Virginia is an approved site for simulation training to fulfill requirements for recertification. Workshops are offered throughout the year.  Visit the MOCA page on their site for course description and schedules.

Fall Symposium

In 2013, the department held our first fall symposium, focused on the perioperative use of opioids for pain management. The symposium was designed around the constraints of our local health care providers' busy clinical schedules. Students from the schools of Medicine and Nursing, nurses, residents, researchers and physicians were all invited, and the cost was underwritten by generous industry support. The result was one intense day of practical information designed to reduce over-dependence on opioids and to ameliorate the unintended consequences of opioid usage.

In 2014, the topic was Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols. Following the successful implementation of an ERAS protocol for colorectal surgery at UVA, the symposium focused on practical aspects of implementing ERAS protocols.

Both of these symposiums, offered at no cost to participants, attracted a wide range of health card providers within and outside the UVA Health System. Stay tuned for 2015!
