Working closely with MD anesthesiologists, our Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) provide quality care before, during, and after surgery at the University of Virginia Hospital.  A CRNA is an experienced acute care nurse who has completed an additional three years of specialized training and passed a national certification examination. The CRNAs are supervised by the Anesthesia Faculty and function under a collaborative agreement.  The Scope of Practice of each CRNA at UVA is defined in the individual’s credentialing documentation. Currently, 20 of our CRNAs provide care on a daily basis.

Utilization of a clinically strong CRNA staff allows for enhanced teaching opportunities for the Anesthesiology residents, as well as allowing seamless anesthesia coverage while residents attend local or remote conferences.

The CRNA staff benefits by working at a state of the art facility, with cutting edge technology.  Because of the Residency Program, the CRNA staff is exposed to the most up to date research and clinical trends.

The Practice Committee, Quality Review Committee, SCOPE committee and OR committee all enjoy participation from the CRNA and Anesthesiology staff.  Additionally there is a Resident-CRNA liaison group which meets regularly to address issues challenging both groups.
