Missing our Pumpkin
If you've visited the Anesthesiology staff area of the UVA Hospital lately, you might have seen an unlikely visitor: big, orange, and ripe for some elective surgery in time for Hallowe'en. But this pumpkin isn't intended for a jack-o-lantern--or for pie, either. This pumpkin is standing in for Danielle Cote, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) currently deployed to Afghanistan.
In pictures by turns playful and poignant, Anesthesiology CRNAs, residents, faculty, and staff are posing with a pumpkin to send the message "missing you, Pumpkin" to Danielle. The project is the brainchild of Susan Van Manen, CRNA, who has posted the pictures to Facebook.
Knowing that Danielle was checking in through Facebook from Afghanistan, Susan wanted to do something special to lessen the sense of isolation service members feel far from home. "I just wanted to do something to let her know we love and care about her," Susan said. The response has been great, with nearly 50 folks posing with the pumpkin so far.
Susan has her camera ready to capture you with the pumpkin, or you can send one to us for posting.
You can see the whole collection in the album, "Missing Our Pumpkin," on the Facebook page of "Uva Anesthesia." If you haven't friended Uva yet, send a friend request. Keep up with the current and past department folks, and let us know what you're doing, too.
