Department announces 2011 promotions
Jacob Raphael, Ashley Shilling, and Mohamed Tiouririne have each been approved for to promotion to Associate Professor of Anesthesiology, effective July 1, 2011. This action was taken at the June meeting of the Board of Visitors. The Department of Anesthesiology congratulates these three faculty members and looks forward to many more years of association with them.

Ashley Shilling first came to the University of Virginia as a medical student. She came into the Department of Anesthesiology as a resident, serving her last year as chief resident. We were fortunate in recruiting her to the faculty upon her graduation from the residency in 2005. She is currently Co-director of the UVA Outpatient Surgery Center, Co-Division chief of Regional Anesthesia, and Co-director of the third year peri-operative and acute care clerkship. Dr. Shilling has been instrumental in developing the Regional Anesthesia Fellowship and mentoring our first fellows. Dr. Shilling has received numerous awards, including the Department's Eastwood Award (outstanding medical student), Korbon Award (outstanding clinical research as a resident) and the School of Medicine Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence (2008). She is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Educators. |

Jacob Raphael was trained in Israel, earning his medical degree from the Hadassah-Hebrew University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from that institution in 2003. He came to the University of Virginia in 2005 after teaching briefly at Hadassah Medical Center. An active researcher, Dr. Raphael is the 2010 recipient of the Clinical Scholar Teaching Award from the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). At UVA, Dr. Raphael provides anesthesia for cardiac, thoracic, and pediatric cardiac procedures. |

Mohamed Tiouririne joined the Department in 2005 after completing his residency and a fellowship in Obstetric Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. His original medical training was at the University of Algiers Medical School in Algeria. At UVA, Dr. Tiouririne heads the Division of Obstetric Anesthesia and is a member of the Regional team. |
