The Immunology Training Program is designed to train and support candidates for the PhD (and MD/PhD) degree from 2 applicant pools:

  1. Students admitted to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BIMS) who have expressed an interest in immunology research.
  2. Students admitted to the Medical Scientist Training Program, (MD/PhD), who choose to pursue the PhD portion of their degree with one of the Training Program mentors.  For more information on the MST Program, click here.

All incoming students entering the BIMS program receive full financial support in their first year from the UVA School of Medicine. The Immunology Training Grant supports students entering their 2nd year who have declared their interest in Immunology and chosen as a thesis mentor one of the faculty members part of the Immunology Training Program.  Appointments to the Immunology Training Grant are made based on a commitment to Immunology related research, evidence of promise as a productive scientist, and (when applicable) performance in the core curriculum and in research rotations.

Interested students should apply to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at the University of Virginia.  For detailed instructions, click here.  Be sure to select "Immunology" as one of your “Research Interests”.

Applicants who make it through the initial screening will be invited to interview with the faculty of the Immunology Training Program on grounds in Charlottesville. The program pays the costs of travel, lodging and meals for these interviews. The interview visit gives prospective students an outstanding chance to meet and talk with faculty members, current students, post-docs and others, as well as to get a feel for the University, the City of Charlottesville and the surrounding environs.
