Biography: Dr. Mark Yeager is a staff cardiologist
and Chairman of the Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics
Department at The University of Virginia. Dr. Mark Yeager
received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Carnegie-Mellon
University, an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. degree from the Department of
Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and his
medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine, where he was
elected to Alpha Omega Alpha. His medicine residency, chief residency
and specialty training in cardiology were performed at Stanford
University Medical Center.
In addition to support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
and philanthropic grants, Mark Yeager's contributions to biomedical
research have been recognized with a Clinical Investigator Award from
the NIH, an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart
Association and a Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research
from the Burroughs Welcome Fund. Dr. Yeager directs a basic research
laboratory examining the structure of macromolecular complexes such as
gap junction membrane channels and integrin receptors. Cardiac gap
junctions electrically couple adjacent myocardial cells and thereby
regulate normal conduction that coordinates the beat-to-beat
contraction of the heart but also arrhythmias such as ventricular
tachycardia and fibrillation, responsible for more than 250,000 deaths
each year. Integrin receptors allow platelets to adhere to one another
and participate in normal blood coagulation as well as clots that
obstruct blood flow during myocardial infarction. The aim of this work
is to gain a deeper understanding of these processes that could lead to
new insights for the design of more effective medicines to treat
arrhythmias and heart attacks.
