Each student is encouraged to use the diverse resources of our neuroscience community to develop a truly individualized course of study. Faculty areas of specialization include: cellular and molecular neurobiology of vertebrates and invertebrates, nerve cell culture, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, behavioral neuroscience, neural and behavioral development and aging, and clinical neuroscience research in epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, deafness, and regeneration.The graduate neuroscience courses are designed to provide a broad knowledge of the various subdisciplines of neuroscience, exposure to the techniques used in neuroscience, and familiarity with the research opportunities. Some courses include: Neuroanatomy, Cell and Molecular Neuroscience, Cell Structure and Function, Sensory Motor Systems and Processes, CNS Development, and Cognitive Neuroscience.

The Department of Neuroscience sponsors two postdoctoral programs, one in the area of Neuroplasticity and Regeneration Research and the other in the area of Neurobiological and Behavioral Development. These training programs are for individuals with M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees who are seeking additional research experience. The department offers the same areas of focus for all candidates as for the predoctoral program. All individuals given this opportunity are funded by training grants from the National Institutes of Health.
