Chair's Welcome
Chair's Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology!
Microbiology is the largest basic science Department with the UVa school of Medicine, comprising an outstanding group of faculty, students and post-doctoral fellows conducting cutting-edge research in many exciting areas of basic biology and human disease. Our research investigations take an integrated and cross-disciplinary approach to address questions in three key major fields: Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology.
Specifically, the faculty members of MIC focus on:
- Microbiology - as it relates to intrinsic features of the pathogen (i.e. what makes a pathogen a pathogen), host-pathogen interactions, and the immune response of the host toward the pathogens
- Immunology - development of the immune system, signaling and modulation of T and B cells during immune responses, immune response to viruses and other pathogens, cancer immunology, immune tolerance, autoimmunity, as well as cell death and cell clearance in the immune system
- Cancer Biology - basic cancer biology in the context of
breast cancer, prostate cancer and pancreatic cancer, tumor
microenvironments, epigenetics, as well as translational cancer biology
and cancer immunology, immunotherapy and neuroblastomas
Our faculty members use a variety of in vitro and in vivo approaches, including all of the modern tools of molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology as well as mouse models and model organisms. It is notable that the research conducted by our faculty often spans more than one of the above three areas i.e. intentionally cross-disciplinary, to probe and answer scientific questions in a much broader scope. I encourage you to visit the various links to learn more about the faculty within the Department, graduate education opportunities, news, seminars etc.
Thanks for visiting the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology!

Directions and Maps
Directions and Maps
The University of Virginia Health Center is located in Charlottesville, in the rolling hills of midwestern Virginia, two hours southwest of the nation's capital, and a little over an hour west of Richmond, the capital of Virginia.
In 1818, Virginia's General Assembly appropriated 15 thousand dollars to found a school "wherein all the branches of useful science shall be taught." In 2000, ground was broken on the 45 Million dollar Biomedical Engineering and Medical Science Building, housing new labs for Biomedical Engineering, Pathology, and other programs such as Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Medicine, as well as a Vivarium space. As we continue to expand in the 21st century, we invite you to visit Jefferson's University.
From the East
Take I-64 West to Exit 118B and follow the sign to the University of Virginia. Proceed on US 29 North, then take the US 29 North Business exit. Turn right onto Fontaine Avenue after coming off the ramp. Follow signs to the UVa Medical Center. After the traffic light, you will be on Jefferson Park Avenue. Follow Jefferson Park Avenue as it bears to the right. Parking: Go to the 11th St. garage - parking is $4 per hour (2009).

Directions to the Departmental office
Parking around Jordan Hall is difficult and the Police department monitors parking closely. Go to the 11th St. garage - parking is $4 per hour - as of 2009. Do NOT park in the Hospital Garage - it is reserved for patients and their guests only. Enter through primary care- the doors are opposite from the main entrance to the parking garage. Precede straight ahead past the pharmacy. Turn right at the fork, crossing the link (enclosed bridge) into the second floor of Jordan Hall. Turn left, then immediately right. Follow this corridor most of the way down, then turn left towards the elevators. Take the elevators to the 7th floor, turn left and follow the signs for the Microbiology Office (room 7012).
