Robert J. Meyer, MD, Inaugural Director of VCTRS

Robert J. Meyer, MD

VCTRS was established with a generous inaugural gift from Altria to foster a multidisciplinary educational approach for individuals interested in translational and regulatory sciences, promulgate the most recent advances in regulatory methodologies, and engage in discovery science for improving regulatory processes for proposed and marketed products.

Dr. Meyer previously distinguished himself in academia, the government and industry. After graduating from Lehigh University cum laude with a BA in Natural Sciences, Dr. Meyer attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine and served as Chief Resident. After a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Vermont, Dr. Meyer was appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine and Co-Medical Director of Lung/Heart-Lung Transplantation at the Oregon Health Sciences University. In 1994 he joined the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Drug Evaluation’s Division of Pulmonary Drug Products, where he served as Medical Reviewer, Medical Team Leader, and then Director. At the FDA he also served as Coordinator of Strategic Planning for Counterterrorism and Director of the Office of Drug Evaluation II. Dr. Meyer received numerous awards for his work at the FDA, including the FDA Outstanding Service Award in 2007.

Dr. Meyer joins us from Merck & Company, where he is Vice President for Global Regulatory, Strategy, Policy and Safety. He also served as the Executive Director of Worldwide Regulatory Affairs from 2007-2008 and Vice President of Global Strategic Regulatory Development from 2008-2009.

Dr. Meyer has been a popular speaker at national meetings and has published important peer-reviewed articles in numerous journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the Archives for Internal Medicine.

The VCTRS Director will develop a unique and progressive vision for VCTRS and provide dynamic leadership for its academic and administrative mission. This will include defining the most important regulatory issues for discussion and research; recruiting new faculty; developing educational certificates in Regulatory Sciences and research initiatives with other departments, centers and schools within the University, and with stakeholder agencies and industry; and promoting executive, undergraduate and graduate student teaching.
