I hope you and your families and friends have had a wonderful holiday season and a safe New Year. 2013 promises to be an exciting and challenging year for the School of Medicine.
In a few months Robert J. Meyer, MD will join the faculty in the School of Medicine, as inaugural Director of the Virginia Center for Translational and Regulatory Sciences (VCTRS). Dr. Meyer, who comes to us from Merck Pharmaceuticals, where he was Director of Worldwide Regulatory, spent over a decade at the FDA and prior to that, as a faculty member at Oregon Health Sciences University. VCTRS was established by a grant from Altria to foster a multidisciplinary approach to educating students and professionals in translational and regulatory sciences, promulgate the most recent advances in regulatory methodologies, and engage in discovery science for improving regulatory processes for proposed and marketed products. As director, Dr. Meyer will develop a vision for VCTRS and provide dynamic leadership for its academic and administrative missions. These will include defining the most important regulatory issues for discussion and research; recruiting new faculty; promoting executive, undergraduate and graduate student teaching; and developing educational certificates in Regulatory Sciences and research initiatives with other departments, centers and schools within the University, as well as with stakeholder agencies and industries. In December, led by Brad Haws, the CEO of UPG, we broke ground on a new childcare center to benefit faculty and staff who work in the UVA Health System. This center, located at 107 Whitewood Rd., will enroll up to 150 children and will be managed by Bright Horizons Family Solutions. This new childcare center will be an interchangeable option with the Malcolm Cole Child Care Center. We look forward to seeing its doors open later this year and offering our most valuable asset — you — an alternative for your childcare needs.
This year will also bring leadership changes. The University has launched a search to fill a newly created position: Executive Vice President for Health Affairs for the University of Virginia. This position, which will return us to the organizational structure that existed until the early 2000s, is being created to align the key components of the Health System under one executive leader to achieve our goal of becoming a top decile academic medical center. It is our hope to have this position filled by the summer. Coupled with forward momentum in our Clinical Strategy, 2013 is full of promise.
As the Affordable Care Act moves from abstract concept into reality, and as sequestration still looms in the distance, we will likely have changes at both the institutional and department level and we will all need to adjust to the shifting environment. Indeed, 2013 will be a year of adaptation and evolution for the School of Medicine. It will be a year full of great opportunity and high demand — a year in which we will set the standard for those who follow in our footsteps for decades to come. I am confident that we will rise to the challenges, and be leaders in the necessary changes to American Medicine. A new year is upon us; let’s make the most of it by renewing our commitment to daily excellence for the sake of our students, our patients, and our medical research. Happy New Year!

Benjamin D. Kozower, MD, Expands Use of da Vinci Robot
Congratulations to Benjamin D. Kozower, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and Public Health Sciences, General Thoracic Surgery, for leading the way in using the da Vinci SI robot to perform thoracic surgery. As an institution, we have used this technology in urology, gynecology, and in head and neck surgery. However, Dr. Kozower is the first to use it for thoracic surgery. He is currently using this treatment option for lobectomies, hiatal hernias, achalasia, esophagectomies, and mediastinal masses.
The da Vinci robot enables more flexibility and precision in doing procedures such as these and, as we move into the future, we will all be using such tools to reduce patient stays and recovery times. “My hope is to dramatically increase the number of procedures we can perform in a minimally invasive fashion,” says Kozower.
Dr. Truwit Was Caught . . . Washing His Hands
Jonathon Truwit, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Chief Medical Officer, was visiting a patient on 8 West. After coming out of the patient’s room, a friendly auditor in a white scrub top handed him a green card, thanking him for washing his hands before and after entering the patient’s room. In the month of November, we have completed more than 5,000 hand-hygiene observations and distributed 4,000+ green and yellow cards. We observed a hand-hygiene compliance rate of 78% in the inpatient units. Thank you for your participation and kindness you have shown to these UVA student auditors. They have a tough and important job!

New FYI Flags Added to Epic
Please be aware that new FYI flags have been added in Epic to help communicate special circumstances about patients. These include: Airway Risk, Blood Products Refusal, Delirium Risk, Cardiac Device Reprogrammed, Durable DNR, Fall Risk, Medication Contract, Narcotic Risk, Sensory Deficit, Visitor Restrictions, eGFR <45 AKI Risk, INR Goal, and Security Concerns.

Call for Submissions —ADE Poster Abstracts, Ninth Annual Medical Education Week
The Academy of Distinguished Educators (ADE) will be sponsoring the ninth annual Medical Education Research Week and Poster Session. The poster session will highlight medical education research and innovations in medical education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine on any aspect of undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, or continuing medical education. This year there will be a third, new category on “Big Ideas in Medical Education.”
Any faculty member, fellow, resident, graduate student, or medical student involved in medical education activities is invited to submit an abstract. The posters will be displayed March 25–29. 2013 LAM Program Begins
The Leadership in Academic Matters (LAM) spring 2013 program kicked off last week and will run through Monday, March 25. The program, originally called Leadership in Academic Medicine when it began in 2004, was renamed Leadership in Academic Matters in 2009 when faculty from across Grounds began to participate alongside faculty from the School of Medicine. LAM has become a university-wide opportunity for faculty to focus on professional development areas, such as self-awareness, managing organizational change, financial and strategic decision-making, media relations, and more.
This season’s session brings together a varied group from across grounds and disciplines, including participants from the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Curry School of Education, the Medical Center, the School of Architecture the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, the Teaching Resource Center, the Women’s Center, and the University of Virginia Library.
Topics include Dimensions of Leadership, Financial Decision Making, Leveraging Difference, Negotiation Skills, Media Training, Emotional and Social Competency Inventory, Networks, and more. Thank you to all of the staff and faculty who have participated in teaching or leading these wonderful discussion groups!
LCME Self-Study Ramps Up
More and more faculty and staff are becoming involved in preparations for our Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation review in Fall 2014.
Self Study. We have recently appointed more than 150 faculty, staff and students to Self Study subcommittees. In addition, we have invited faculty from across Grounds, alumni, and community members — an additional 30 participants — to serve on these groups. The subcommittee chairs will meet in Spring 2013, and the kick-off for the Self Study is June 10. Barnett Nathan, MD, Associate Professor of Neurology, is the Faculty Chair of the Self Study.
LCME Database. Beginning in January, the accreditation staff will begin compiling the extensive LCME database, which will be used during the Self Study and later submitted to the LCME. Timely completion of the database is critical to a successful accreditation process, and I ask that all faculty and staff respond as thoroughly and quickly as possible to requests for database information.

NRMP Seeks Nominations for Board Position
The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is seeking nominations for an open position on its board of directors. The term of service for the position is four years, with a maximum of two terms. A summary of the qualifications and background being sought can be found at www.nrmp.org/nominations2013.pdf. The board meets three times a year, usually in October, January, and May. If you are interested, or know someone who is interested, I encourage you to submit a nomination.
Nominations must include the nominees' curricula vitae (15 pages maximum) and a letter of support. Nominations should be sent to email@example.com. The deadline for receipt of nominations is Feb. 1. After that date, nominees who meet eligibility criteria will receive a supplemental application requesting information about their knowledge of and experience with the NRMP. A slate of candidates will be presented for election by the board at its May meeting, and the terms of service for the newly elected board members will commence July 1.
SOM Students Awarded a Multitude of Scholarships
For the 2012-2013 school year, more than 30 competitive outside scholarships have been awarded to UVA School of Medicine (SOM) students. The space here prohibits us from listing them all in detail and calling out these extraordinary students by name; however, these scholarships represent outstanding achievements. Our students have been honored by such diverse organizations as The Southeastern Grain and Feed Association, the American Indian Graduate Center, the Tylenol Future Care Scholarship, The Society of The Cincinnati of Virginia, The Hampton Roads Community Foundation, and more, with awards ranging from $750 to $28,000. Randolph J. Canterbury, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education, says, "We are fortunate that the students who matriculate to the School of Medicine are among the top medical students in the United States. Bankole Johnson, MD, PhD, Honored with Mendelson Award
Congratulations to Bankole Johnson, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Neuroscience, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, for being selected as the 2013 recipient of the NIAAA Jack Mendelson Award. This award is bestowed to an outstanding alcohol investigator whose clinical research makes a substantial contribution to our understanding of alcoholism susceptibility, alcohol's effects on the brain and other organs, and prevention and treatment of alcohol use disorders. Dr. Johnson is receiving this honor for his pioneering work in molecular genetics and pharmacotherapy for alcohol dependence. Congratulations, Dr. Johnson!
Deadline Approaches for LaunchPad Program
The deadline for proposals for LaunchPad is rapidly approaching. LaunchPad is a translational research program fund supporting collaborative research projects that propose innovative and viable solutions to curing, treating, or diagnosing diabetes. The program was created to leverage the robust discovery capacity at UVA to strategically fund projects holding exceptional promise for achieving translational outcomes. The program is interested in all proposals with potential application in the type 1 diabetes setting; however proposed research impacting both type 1 and type 2 diabetics will be considered.
The program funds one-year grants of up to $100K in direct costs, with a start date in April. The deadline for proposals is Feb. 18. Presidential Poster Competition Deadline Approaches
The Third Annual Presidential Research/Scholarship Poster competition will be held on May 3. This popular event, started upon President Sullivan’s arrival at UVA, is open to all post-docs, graduate, and undergraduate students, and is dedicated to one of our central missions: research and its impact. I encourage faculty involvement and participation through your students and postdocs.

Deadline Nears for Hostler Award Nominations
The deadline is approaching to nominate a colleague for the 2013 Sharon L. Hostler Women in Medicine Leadership Award. This award, now in its 15th year, will honor a faculty member (physician and/or basic scientist) of either gender, who has demonstrated excellence in leadership, scholarship, and mentoring and exerted influence in fostering a better institutional environment by advocating for women's issues.
Please submit a CV and a letter describing the qualities and achievements that make your candidate an apt choice. Hospital Drive Releases Ninth Edition
Hospital Drive, the School of Medicine’s online creative journal that examines themes of health, illness, and healing, has released its ninth edition. It is published online twice a year and is one of only a few medical-school-based literary magazines with a national audience. Editor-in-Chief Daniel Becker, MD, Professor of Medicine and Public Health Sciences, Director of the UVA Center for Biomedical Ethics & Humanities, says, “We receive about 20 times more work than we can publish, with submissions from across the country and sometimes the ocean. Anyone can submit, and we’d like to see more work from local writers, artists, and photographers. Schwartz Center Rounds Offers Insight & Discussion
I urge you to participate in our next installment of Schwartz Center Rounds on Friday, Jan. 25. These free rounds are open to everyone — faculty, staff, students, caregivers, and noncaregivers — and offer a safe forum for the discussion of difficult psychological, social, and emotional aspects of providing care. The open-forum format is case-based, exploring real UVA cases. Rounds take place every other month; this month’s session will be held in School of Nursing’s McLeod Hall Auditorium. Lunch is provided starting at 11:30 a.m. The Rounds run from noon–1 p.m. Prior registration is encouraged for CME/CEU credit, though walk-ins are welcome to attend. SOM Employees of the Month Are …
Tawanna Sue Marshburn (November)
Sue, Administrative Assistant for the Department of Pathology, was recognized by her colleagues for her ability to smoothly and expertly handle day-to-day tasks, as well as numerous other assignments. James Patterson, MD, Professor, Surgical Pathology, indicated that September was a difficult month in Surgical Pathology because of a shortage of transcriptionists. He says, “Sue willingly (and cheerfully) pitched in and provided important transcription services during this time, despite having an otherwise full workload and duties as a program Coordinator for the Dermatopathology Fellowship.” Her efforts were “not confined to one incident, but reflective of her long-term dedication to the Department of Pathology.”
There were many supportive comments for Sue’s nomination, and Medical Center Resident Steve Cook, MD, summed them up: “Sue is key to patient care because she deals with a lot of patient pathology cases, both coming in and going out of UVA. These are usually diagnostically difficult cases and quick turn-around time on results is crucial for the referring pathologist and treating physician to get the patient appropriate treatment in a timely manner. She facilitates this quick turnaround time.”
Emily Gray (December)
As Senior Grants & Contracts Administrator for the Department of Neurology, Emily was acknowledged by Karen Johnston, MD, Professor of Neurology and Public Health Sciences, Department of Neurology Chair, and Jaideep Kapur, MD, PhD, Professor of Neurology, among others, for her outstanding work related to the SHINE trial, one of the largest NIH-funded clinical trials that UVA has coordinated. Emily’s work benefits the entire department and has enhanced its recognition on the national stage with such large multisite grants managed expertly.
Her supervisor, Joe Cardella, Director of Finance and Administration, Urology, stated that Emily did all of this with skill and grace “while expanding the grants team’s responsibility to take on Otolaryngology as well, improving cost containment and accuracy.”
